Store Coupons and Manufacturer Coupons-Can I use both?

Today I had a few questions about using coupons in different combinations and I thought this would be a great  topic of the day and allow us a chance to really deep dive into this.

First a couple of definitions: A store coupon is one that your store provides either online, in their weekly ad, on your receipt or as a Catalina.  It will usually say "store coupon" or "Target coupon", etc.  A manufacturer coupon is one that the actual manufacturers of your favorite products distribute in the Sunday inserts, online, as peelies (coupons you find on the product at the store that you can "peel" off and use) or blinkies (SmartSource machines that are located near products you are buying) and it will say "manufacturer's coupon" at the top.

Please note: these questions/answers are general answers and you should ALWAYS refer to your specific store's coupon policy to confirm.

Can I pair a store coupon with a manufacturer's coupon?
YES! The only store coupons that you can not combine are from stores that do not accept manufacturer's coupons to begin with, i.e. 99cents store, Dollar Tree, Grocery Outlet, etc.

Notice the picture below shows it is a manufacturer's coupon EVEN though the Target logo is on it.  You could pair this with an actual Target coupon.

If I have a B1G1 free manufacturer's coupon, can I combine it with another manufacturer's coupon?
YES!  You can use a cents off manufacturer's coupon to reduce the cost of the buy 1 and still get the other one free!

If my store is having a B1G1 free ad or store coupon, what manufacturer's coupons can I use?
First and foremost, the majority of stores will allow you to use a coupon for BOTH the buy one and the get one.  This is HUGE!  Example we see often lately: B1G1 free vitamins $6.99.  Use (2) $1/1 coupons and reduce the cost to $4.99/2.  Some stores will allow you to use a B1G1 free manufacturer's coupon in conjunction with the store sale/coupon to get both items free, but you will need to check with your store's policy.

What if I have a manufacturer's coupon that gives me $ off a particular item when I buy another item?  Can I use a 2nd manufacturer's coupon for the other item?
Depends on the actual wording of the coupon.  For example, if the coupon reads: "$1 off when you buy Oreo Cookies and Milk" the answer is no. If the coupon reads "$1 off Milk when you buy Oreo Cookies", then the answer is yes.  You could use a 2nd coupon for the Oreo Cookies. 

I hope this helps you all out.  I, too, have had questions about the exact same things and really had to deep dive into many of the coupon policies to ensure that I read them correctly and have these answers for you. 

Stacking a store coupon with a manufacturer's coupon will ultimately save you the most money.  Remember, you don't have to use a coupon right when you get it, find it or locate it.  Put it in your binder until the right sale or store coupon comes along and really save!!!

I wasn't originally planning on buying much besides what I posted yesterday, but then I hit the ExtraCare bucks kiosk and lo and behold.....(2) $3/$15 coupons and (1) $1/1 Maybelline coupon plus a few others.

CVS Shopping Picks for 8/7-8/13

CVS is my favorite place to shop for health and beauty products. To be successful at CVS, you need two things: 1-A CVS ExtraCare card and 2-A CVS Green Bag tag.  Each time you shop at CVS, scan your ExtraCare card at the kiosk and CVS coupons will print out.  Many times these are dollars off when you spend a certain amount.  Please note that you should continue to scan your card until the kiosk reads "There are no more coupons available at this time".

By using your ExtraCare Card and combining it with coupons, you can get very low priced items and many things for free.  The best way to save money at CVS is to do multiple transactions and "roll over" your ECB's (ExtraCare Bucks) from each transaction.

I follow many different blogs and they all post great deals, but some show too many deals that are for things that I don't want to stock up on or don't necessarily use/need.

I will tell you that I'm considering an extreme transaction for the $10 gas card. I do have (20) $1/1 Colgate Total toothpaste coupons.  I could buy (18) at 3/$5, pay $12 and receive the $10 gas card.  I just don't know....

Shopping at Albertsons

Today, I decided to shop at Albertson's.  My plan was to do 2 transactions.  My first one included $20 in P&G products in order to receive a $5 Catalina good for my next shopping trip.  My intention was to use my $5 Catalina in my 2nd transaction.  After the cashier finished scanning all of my coupons, I let her know that I wanted to use my $5 Catalina from the last transaction (BTW, it was still on the Catalina machine).  She stated that I couldn't use it in the same "trip". I said, "It was from the first transaction".  She then said "It's good for your next shopping trip, not next transaction".  Her explanation was that I had to physically leave the store and get back in line to use the Catalina.  She then stated she would do it this time but "the store is cracking down on couponing".  That led me to head to Albertson's website and their posted coupon policy.  Boy, I wish I had it printed with me because it clearly states that you cannot use the Catalina in the same transaction it was earned, but you can use it in another transaction.  This is clearly an instance when a well-educated couponer knows the store's policy better than their own cashiers.

Here are my biggest takeaways:

1. Coupons stating “on next/future purchase or visit” cannot be used in the transaction in which they are generated. Next purchase is defined as a separate transaction.
2. Rain checks for store coupons will be given out as long as the store coupon does not state on it “while supplies last”.
3. Albertsons DOES allow manufacturer coupons that state they cannot be ‘doubled’ to be used in conjunction with a Twice the Value store coupon.(THIS IS A BIG ONE)
4. Albertsons requests that customers do not exceed three (3) consecutive transactions.

Albertsons Coupon Policy
Albertsons promotes a coupon friendly shopping experience and encourages customers to participate in store, manufacturer and internet coupon use. The following policy guidelines are current, but Albertsons may change this policy at any time and policy changes may not be advertised. Coupon redemptions are subject to the policy in effect at time of redemption. The current policy information can be discussed with individual store management but is not posted in each store.

Coupons – Definition: Coupons are a form of tender to reduce an order total based on merchandise purchased. Retailers are not required by law to accept manufacturers’ coupon. Coupons can be in print and/or in electronic form, and may be integrated into the register systems where they are deducted automatically when all purchase requirements are met.
General Coupon Acceptance Guidelines:

• Coupons are accepted in accordance to the stated requirements on the coupon at the time of purchase. These requirements include, but are not limited to: product type, flavor(s), size(s), quantities and minimum/maximum dollar purchase limits.
• Coupons are intended for one time use and cannot be redeemed more than once.
• Coupons have no cash value.
• Albertsons only accepts original coupons and does not accept photocopied or reproduced coupons (including multiple prints of same series internet coupons).
• Albertsons does not accept expired coupons. Printed expiration dates are verified in addition to scanning the coupon for validity.
• Coupons stating “on next/future purchase or visit” cannot be used in the transaction in which they are generated. Next purchase is defined as a separate transaction.
• The coupon redemption value on ‘Free’ coupons may not exceed the value of the item.
• Albertsons will accept ONE manufacturer coupon and ONE store coupon on the same qualifying item.
• Albertsons does not accept competitor coupons. (Coupons generated by any competitor with competitor logo are considered competitor coupons.)
• All applicable sales taxes are paid by the customer at the full value of the item.
• Albertsons reserves the right to refuse any coupons at its discretion.

Manufacturer Coupons

• Coupons issued by manufacturers contain redemption guidelines including, but not limited to: “terms of agreement”, “face value”, “expiration date” and the verbiage “manufacturer coupon”. Albertsons adheres to all manufacturer redemption guidelines.
• Albertsons may issue private promotion “manufacturer coupons” in advertisements that state “redeemable only at Albertsons” in which Albertsons is the only retailer that will accept.
• Coupons that exceed the retail value of an item will be adjusted to provide the maximum value, not exceeding the price of the item
• Albertsons accepts internet generated manufacturer coupons that have the following conditions:
  • Coupons must scan at checkout.
  • Coupons must have serial numbers and follow an industry-standard format.
  • Coupons must clearly indicate that they are a manufacturer coupon and have a valid manufacture address on the printed coupon.
• Albertsons does not accept internet generated manufacturer coupons that have the following conditions:
  • FREE product without a required purchase.
  • A redemption value that exceeds $5.00.
  • The absence of a clear and scannable UPC bar code.
  • o   Same serial numbers (internet sites print time & date stamps on coupons and limit the number of coupons that can be printed from same computer).
  • o   The absence of a valid manufacturer address on the printed coupon.

Store Coupons

• Rain checks for store coupons will be given out as long as the store coupon does not state on it “while supplies last”.

  • Albertsons DOES allow manufacturer coupons that state they cannot be ‘doubled’ to be used in conjunction with a Twice the Value store coupon.

The Total Shopping Experience

• In an effort to serve our all customers better than our competitors, and provide a timely checkout, Albertsons requests that customers do not exceed three (3) consecutive transactions.

·         Additional lanes will be opened to serve all customers in a timely manner if the current business and staffing level permits.

Double Coupons and Other Cool Ways To Save

Ok, you’ve started collecting coupons.  You’ve got an organization method, now what?
First things first, you must get a shopper’s card for every grocery store that you shop at. 
Second, get an ExtraCare Card (CVS) and Wellness Card (RiteAid).  In a later lesson, I’ll show you how to really save at drug stores to get a TON of cheap products.

Now, let’s figure out where and how to shop for our main groceries.

Every Tuesday, you’ll receive your grocery store ads.  You MUST take the time to really study them and compare them to the coupons that you have.

I shop at Ralphs and Vons/Pavilions for the majority of my items.  Here’s why.  Both stores double coupons. Yes, you read that right. They double coupons, but….not all coupons and there are limits.

• They will double any coupon up to .50
• They will increase the value of a .51-.99 coupon to 1.00
• They will ONLY do this for 1 like coupon. 

What does that mean?  Well, you can’t go crazy and clear a shelf of BullsEye BBQ sauce that’s 10/$10 because you have a boatload of .50 off coupons.  It means, you can get one for free ($1 minus the .50 coupon doubled) and all others at .50.  There is no limit on how many coupons you can use. Only on how many they will double.

Albertsons often sends out mailers with Double Coupons that you can pair with your manufacturer coupon.  This will allow a double of one coupon up to a $1, but there is always a restriction on how many “doublers” can be used per transaction.  This month’s restriction is only (1) double coupon per transaction. Bummer….

When looking at store ads, look for in ad coupons.  These store coupons can be “stacked” with a manufacturer coupon for added savings.  Many times, the in store ads allow for multiples at that particular price.  This is great when you have multiple manufacturer coupons or a great coupon that is $1/2.  For example, Pavilions has an in store ad for Ziploc storage bags $1.49 Limit 2.  You pair that with a $1/2 Ziploc bags and you now pay .99 each for brand name bags and not the generics from the .99 only store. 

• If you use in ad store coupons, hand those to your cashier first.
• Tell your cashier how many of that product you purchased so they know to scan the coupon more than once.

Next thing to look for in your ads is combined sales, such as “Receive $5 off when you purchase 10 mix and match items.” This is where I save really big at stores like Albertsons, Food 4 Less and Stater Brothers.  This is like having multiple store coupons stacked with manufacturer coupons. 

• Normally, there is not a limit of how many $5 off you can receive, as long as the items are purchased in the right multiples.
• Also, not all the included products will be listed in the ad and you may find some great additional products you want to purchase.
• You must write down every product you buy in the promotion to ensure that you receive the $5 off at checkout.
• This is important for 2 reasons: 1-just being off by one will keep you from the discount and 2-if you know you bought 20 items and only 1 $5 off is given, you have your list of what you bought to refer back to in the event the cashier did not scan an item by accident. (happens often and it’s usually a Gatorade/vitamin water type product that slips through)

Last, look for checkout offers, such as Catalinas. Catalina offers are coupons that print at the register and are free money that can be used for your next shopping trip.  Examples of Catalinas: Buy (4) Nature Valley granola bars receive $3 Catalina.  Buy (2) General Mills Cereals receive a Catalina for free gallon of milk up to $4.50.  Some stores offer additional promotions.  Albertsons was giving 5% off Summer Rewards Certificates during the 4th of July weekend based on different levels of spending.  Pavilions/Von’s are giving $10 towards your next purchase, if you spend $75 or more.

• If there is a specific dollar amount attached to the Catalina or Store Reward, it is based on pre-coupon totals.  Yes, PRE-COUPON totals!
• Usually, there are restrictions of what is purchased to receive the certificates, as well as, what they can be used to purchase.  Those restrictions include, but are not limited to; alcohol, cigarettes, gift certificates and lottery tickets.

Ok, now that you know some of my tricks, let’s get shopping!
